Abstract: In one example, a material dispensing apparatus comprises a plurality of material containers, wherein the plurality of material containers comprises a first set of material containers arranged to contain a first material and a second set of material containers arranged to contain a second, different, material, and each material container of the second set is located relative to a respective material container of the first set to form a pair of material containers. In use, the material dispensing apparatus is controllable to move across a build platform of an additive manufacturing system. Each of the plurality of material containers comprises an outlet mechanism that is independently controllable, relative to outlet mechanisms of others of the plurality of material containers, such that each pair of material containers selectively dispenses at least a portion of a respective amount of material onto a respective portion of the build platform as the material dispensing apparatus moves across the build platform, such that, collectively, the plurality of material containers forms a complete layer of material on the build platform as the material dispensing apparatus performs a single pass across the build platform.

Abstract: A hybrid manufacturing apparatus utilizing both additive and subtractive manufacturing processes has a cutting mechanism, a magazine, and a deposition nozzle. A cutting mechanism engages and modifies material fed from a magazine, the finished material of this process to be positioned by a deposition nozzle. More specifically, the cutting mechanism provides a chamber supporting an inlet, an outlet, and at least one cutting head. The inlet receives fresh material, the cutting head is positioned within the chamber to create the desired contours in or on the material, and the material then exits the chamber via the outlet to be deposited according to instructions extracted from a digital model in a form of numerical control (NC) programming language. This model is natively subdivided into individual constructs each defining a set of values to guide creation of corresponding physical sections, and the placement thereof.

Abstract: An additive manufacturing system includes a cooling module to cause a first dominant air flow over a first print zone area and a second dominant air flow over a second print zone area. An energy source is to apply energy to the print zone. A controller is to (i) determine air flow characteristics by: controlling the cooling module to cause the first and second air flows to have respective first and second predetermined flow rates, controlling the energy source to apply energy to the print zone, and determining at least one of a parameter of the energy source and a characteristic of the first air flow and the second air flow. The controller is also to (ii) set at least one of the first and second air flow rates to be used during the processing of subsequent 3D printing operations based on the determined parameter or characteristic.

Abstract: Methods, particularly automated methods, are provided, as well as 3D-printed composite and hollow objects and 3D-printing systems for printing them. Methods comprise deriving a central line of a hollow 3D object model, calculating reference point(s) and/or line(s) along an inner surface of the hollow 3D object model, and filling the hollow 3D object model with material that comprises a thread defined with respect to the central line and the reference point(s) and/or line(s) and with filling material surrounding the thread. The support construction thus formed may be removed from the 3D object by pulling on the thread, extracting it and the surrounding support filling from the hollow object, thus enabling 3D-printing of convoluted or elongated hollow objects and objects with narrow openings. The parameters of the thread, such as type of curve and thickness, are selected to ensure thread extraction without risk of tearing or knotting the thread.
