Abstract:
A laser-sinterable powder product has been prepared having unique properties which allow the powder to be sintered in a selective laser sintering machine to form a sintered part which is near-fully dense. For most purposes, the sintered part is indistinguishable from another part having the same dimensions made by isotropically molding the powder. In addition to being freely flowable at a temperature near its softening temperature, a useful powder is disclosed that has a two-tier distribution in which substantially no primary particles have an average diameter greater than 180 mu m, provided further that the number average ratio of particles smaller than 53 mu m is greater than 80 %, the remaining larger particles being in the size range from 53 mu m to 180 mu m. A powder with slow recrystallization rates, as evidenced by non-overlapping endothermic and exothermic peaks in their differential scanning calorimetry characteristics for scan rates of on the order of 10 DEG C to 20 DEG C per minute, will also result in sintered parts that are near-fully dense, with minimal dimensional distortion.
Abstract:
This invention is a process for comminuting a cellulose ether which comprises extruding a hydrated cellulose ether through a plurality of orifices, each orifice having a cross-sectional area of from 7.5 x 10 m to 1 x 10 m , to form an elongated extrudate, and then cutting the elongated extrudate to desired lenght. The high density cellulose ether product is typically cold water dispersible, non-dusty, and free flowing.

Abstract:
Hot melt adhesive masses are provided with a tackless surface by a process which comprises the steps of: a) extruding the hot melt adhesive through an appropriate die orifice; b) spraying the surface of the extruded adhesive with a molten film forming low molecular weight polymer or formulated polymeric material, the material being selected so that it will not appreciably detract from the properties of the adhesive composition when remelted therewith; c) heating the surface of the coated adhesive at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to remelt the film forming polymer so as to form a continuous coating thereof yet insufficient to appreciably melt the adhesive; and d) cooling the thus coated adhesive mass to a temperature suitable for handling.
Abstract:
Adhesive beads comprise a core comprising a pressure sensitive adhesive material and an essentially discontinuous organic polymer disposed about the core. The beads are free-flowing at room temperature. Upon application of heat and/or pressure the core is activated and blends with the coating to provide a pressure sensitive adhesive.
Abstract:
Absorbent particles consisting essentially of zones of polymeric material interconnected by linkages through an effective agglomerating amount of silica or silicate can be made by forming a gel mass by mixing particles of polymeric material with water and an effective agglomerating amount of a silica or silicate, and drying and comminuting the gel mass.

According to the invention, this film-forming product takes the form of homogenous granulated particles capable of dispersing easily in an aqueous or organic solvent and providing a regular, non-matt film and its dry material comprises: at least one non-toxic ingestable film-forming substance in a quantity by weight of between 30 and 95 %; at least one colouring pigment in a quantity by weight of between 5 and 50 %; and possibly at least one plastifier suitable for human consumption in a quantity by weight of 30 % or less.
Abstract:
A powder for use in selective laser sintering, from which prototype articles and masters for molds may be formed, is disclosed. The powder is formed by spray drying a polymer emulsion to yield a distribution of particles of substantially spherical shape. The powder is then air classified to remove excessively small particles from the distribution; the powder may also be screened to remove large particles therefrom, as well. The resulting distribution of particles sizes, by volume, preferably has a mean particle size of between about 20 mu and about 50 mu , with preferably less than about 5 % (by volume) of its particles with a size of less than about 15 mu and less than about 2 % (by volume) of its particles with a size of greater than about 75 mu . The powder is subjected to selective laser sintering to produce an article of approximately 55 % to 75 % of theoretical density. The article may be used as a prototype article or part, or as a pattern or master for a mold.
