A data storage device comprising a card-shaped body, a memory within the card-shaped body, and a connector for connecting the memory to a personal computer. The card-shaped body comprises a swipable portion with a magnetic stripe arranged to be read by a magnetic stripe card reader. The card-shaped body can comprise a main portion with a recess and a connector ' portion comprising the memory and connector. In that case, the connector portion is hingably mounted on the main portion to be rotatable between a closed position in which the connector portion is located within the recess, and an open position in which the connector of the connector portion is located outside of the recess so that it can be used to connect the memory to a personal computer.

A flash memory mass storage drives stores user files in a convenient credit card sized drive. Embodiments function as both a credit card and a mass storage drive. Communication may be through a host interface connector such as a USB connector, a magnetic interface, a smart card interface, and/or a near field communication interface. In certain embodiments the drive comprises a portion that is sufficiently thin to be swiped through a standard credit card, ATM, or point of sale device. The USB connector of the drive can easily be plugged into even a crowded receptacle of a host-computing device.

The present invention relates to a storage card having selectable contact elements a terminal capable of receiving said storage card and method of its operation. The storage card with selectable contact elements, comprises an interface having a plurality of contact elements, a storage card controller, being connected to at least a subset of said contact elements, a storage memory device, being connected to said storage card controller, a switching unit, that is connected to said storage card controller and to at least one of said contact elements of said interface, wherein said storage card controller is connected to said switching unit to controllably select said at least one contact element.

The assembly for storing data includes at least one data storage device and leads for carrying signals in between the connector contacts (18-21) and the data storage device(s). At least one of the data storage devices is incorporated in the connecting assembly (2;9;29;32;39).

The invention is directed to a memory card that includes a host connector conforming to a host connection standard protruding from a flexible housing. The flexible housing conforms to a form factor of a memory card standard, substantially similar to a credit card with an increased thickness to accommodate the host connector and allow a memory to fit within the housing. The host connector facilitates direct coupling of the memory card to a computing device without an adapter or reader. The memory card may include a smart card contact conforming to an ISO 7816 smart card standard that allows the memory card to be backward compatible with conventional smart card readers. Unlike conventional memory cards, the flexible memory card is compatible with smart card applications, and unlike conventional smart cards, the flexible memory card includes a powerful, internal memory.

Die Erfindung stellt einen tragbaren Datenträger insbesondere in Gestalt eines USB Tokens bereit der über geeignete Schnittstelle besonders einfach an externe Geräte anschliessbar ist. Der tragbare Datenträger (1) wird mehrschichtig (2A bis 2E) in Chipkartentechnik hergestellt wobei Höhe (17') und Breite (21") an die Abmessungen des Steckraumes (19) unter den Gegenkontakten (20A bis 20D) des externen Gerätes angepasst sind.
