Abstract: 1,2-Dideoxy-1,2-diamino oligosaccharides and polysaccharides as shown in General Formula (1) and derivatives thereof are described, and methods suitable for their preparation in free-base, salt or metal-complexed form. In addition, new uses of 1,2-dideoxy-1,2-diamino oligosaccharides, including the large-scale production of 2-deoxy-2-amino oligosaccharides, are described. General Formula (1) wherein : R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H and a carbohydrate moiety, with the proviso that at least one of the groups R 1 , R 2 or R 3 is a carbohydrate moiety; R 4 is selected from the group consisting of : H, optionally substituted C 1-20 -alkyl, optionally substituted heteroalkyl, optionally substituted C 2-20 -alkenyl, optionally substituted C 2-20 -alkynyl, optionally substituted C 3-10 -cycloalkyl, optionally substituted heterocyclyl, optionally substituted aryl, and optionally substituted heteroaryl.
