Abstract:
Disclosed are display devices comprising ionic liquids and more specifically devices comprising ionic liquids and at least one other substance, wherein the at least one other substance is a solid or a liquid and is generally immiscible with, or 5 insoluble in, the ionic liquid. The display devices use convection and/or mechanically formed currents to create interesting visual effects, particularly when the container is illuminated and the ionic liquid and the at least one other substance are coloured.
Abstract:
An apparatus for determining the Plastic Limit of a soil sample, said apparatus comprising a sample holder for holding a sample of soil, a penetration tool mounted above said sample holder for reciprocal movement along a substantially vertical axis, whereby a tip of the penetration tool can penetrate into a soil sample contained in the sample holder, wherein loading means are provided for applying a predetermined vertical load to the penetration tool, control means being provided for controlling the operation of said loading means whereby the Plastic Limit of the soil can be determined as the water content of a soil sample at which a predetermined penetration depth of the tip of the penetration tool into the soil sample is achieved upon application of said predetermined vertical load for a predetermined time period.
Abstract:
A method of detecting patterns in a plurality of data blocks, comprising generating a first database comprising a first subset of patterns of a set of selected patterns, generating a second database comprising a second subset of remaining patterns of the set of selected patterns, receiving the plurality of data blocks, and, for each data block, using the data block and a hash function to generate a key, using the key to search the first database, locating an entry of the first database corresponding to the key, reading the content of the entry which comprises zero or a selected pattern that generates the key, if the content of the entry comprises zero, determining that the data block does not comprise a selected pattern, and outputting a first output indicating that the data block does not comprise a selected pattern, or if the content of the entry comprises a selected pattern, determining that the data block comprises the selected pattern and outputting a first output indicating that the data block comprises the selected pattern, or determining that the data block does not comprise the selected pattern and outputting a first output indicating that the data block does not comprise the selected pattern, and using a content addressable memory (CAM) to compare the data block with the second database, determining that the data block matches a selected pattern in the second database, and outputting a second output indicating that the data block comprises the selected pattern, or determining that the data block does not match a selected pattern in the second database, and outputting a second output indicating that the data block does not comprise a selected pattern, combining the first and second outputs, and if either output indicates that the data block comprises a selected pattern, outputting a flag indicating that the data block comprises the selected pattern.
Abstract:
An electricity network fault detection system comprising at least two fault detectors which detect a signal comprising a sferic caused by a fault in the network, and a system processor which receives details of the detected sferic from each of the detectors, and determines the approximate location of generation of the sferic. When a fault occurs in an electricity network, a fault current is generated. These, in conjunction with a part of the network where the fault current has occurred which acts as an antenna, produce electromagnetic radiation in the form of atmospheric radio waves or sferics. It has been realised that these sferics may be used to detect a fault and to determine its approximate location.
Abstract:
A method for user authentication are provided, the method comprising the steps of obtaining an identification element of a user, presenting the user with a plurality of user perceptible variables which are perceptible by the user using their sense of touch, detecting selection of at least one of the user perceptible variables by the user, comparing the at least one selected user perceptible variable with one or more user perceptible variables previously associated with the identification element of the user, and authenticating the user if the at least one selected user perceptible variable corresponds to at least one of the user perceptible variables previously associated with the identification element of the user. The user perceptible variables may be perceptible by the user using tactile sensory information. The user perceptible variables may comprise patterns of tactile sensory information, for example any of patterns of pressure, patterns of vibration, patterns of temperature. In one embodiment of the invention, each user perceptible variable may comprise a pattern of pressure provided by a plurality of pins, perceptible by the user by placing at least one fingertip in contact with the pins.
Abstract:
The application discloses novel processes for the oligomerisation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, and more specifically the use of selected ionic liquids in the oligomerisation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, which allows for selection of the oligomers formed.
Abstract:
Described are specific binding members e.g. antibodies which may be used in the treatment of diseases associated with cathepsin S activity. The specific binding members binds cathepsin S and inhibits its proteolytic activity. The binding members may be used in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, autoimmune disorders, and other diseases associoated with excessive, deregulated or inappropriate angiogenesis.
Abstract:
An apparatus for monitoring the polymerisation of surgical cement comprising a container for holding the surgical cement, sensing means to detect at least one environmental factor affecting surgical cement polymerisation or property of surgical cement indicating the level of polymerisation, wherein the sensing means is adapted to produce an output according to at least one environmental factor or property. The apparatus further comprises signal means to inform a user of the condition of the surgical cement according to the output of the sensing means. Suitably at least one environmental factor or property of the surgical cement is ambient temperature, ambient humidity, temperature of the surgical cement, viscosity of the surgical cement or the speed of sound through the surgical cement.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for measurement of the intra-ocular pressure (IOP) are presented. A pressure sensor is left freestanding on the cornea of a supine subject, thus eliminating tremors introduced when a pressure sensor is held by hand, without having to use complicated mounting equipment.
Abstract:
The invention provides combination therapies and methods for the treatment of cancers associates with p53 mutations. The method comprises the separate, sequential or simultaneous administration of a therapeutically effective amount of a) a specific binding member, for example CH-11, which binds to a cell death receptor, for example Fas, or a nucleic acid encoding said binding member and b) a chemotherapeutic agent, wherein the chemotherapeutic agent is a topoisomerase inhibitor, for example CPT-1 or a thymidylate synthase inhibitor, for example TDX. Synergistic cytotoxic effects have been demonstrated using such combinations.
