Abstract: A method of predicting or inferring a piece of information for encoding or decoding uses a predictor from a spatial neighbor, or from a reference picture, instead of predicting or inferring the information, such as a flag for a current block, from a motion predictor block. This procedure can be used in several ways, or used in various motion vector prediction modes, such as Frame Rate Up Conversion or various variations of Advanced Motion Prediction. Other embodiments provide other methods and combinations to derive or infer motion information to increase coding efficiency.

Abstract: A method and apparatus adapts motion vector prediction for suitability to omnidirectional video. One embodiment improves handling of temporal motion vector predictors or rescaled motion vector predictors. Another embodiment is suited to spatial motion vector predictors, and another to a combination of either temporal or spatial motion vector predictors. The method analyzes a scale factor derived from, at least one of, the time index of the predictor, the time index of the reference image's predictor, the time index of a reference image's current block, and the time index of the current block. If, for example, the scale factor is greater than one, motion vector transformation is performed before motion vector rescaling. If, however, the scale factor is less than or equal to one, the motion vector rescaling is performed before motion vector transformation.

Abstract: To construct an MPM list for encoding or decoding an intra prediction mode, a plurality of neighbor blocks or pre-defined intra prediction modes may be used. An intra mode for the neighbor blocks, or from the pre-defined intra prediction modes, is checked for availability. If available, the intra mode may be included in the MPM list if it is not already included in the list. The count is incremented for the intra prediction mode each time it is available when checked. In one implementation, the MPM construction process terminates when the MPM list is full and the MPM list is sorted in a non-increasing order. In another implementation, all possible modes are checked for statistics. Then the MPM list is sorted, and truncated to keep the first MPM modes.

Abstract: Video signal coding and decoding functions can generate lists of potential candidates to use in coding and decoding, for example, predictors. Video signal coding component candidates undergo operations before potential inclusion in candidate lists. The candidates are checked after being modified by the operations to see if other equal candidates are already in the candidate list. If equal candidates are not in the list, the modified candidates are added to the candidate list. If equal candidates are already in the list, the modified candidates are not added to the list. Operations that can be performed comprise rounding and clipping.

Abstract: A method for video decoding is disclosed. A directional intra prediction mode is decoded (910) for a current block of a picture in a video, said directional intra prediction mode having a direction. Based on said directional intra prediction mode, a first predictor for a sample is accessed (7010), the sample being within said current block. Based on said directional intra prediction mode, a second predictor for said sample, is accessed (7020) said first and second predictors being on a line at least approximating said direction. A sample value of said sample is predicted (7030) by using said first and second predictors; and said sample of said current block is reconstructed (965) based on said predicted sample value.
