Abstract:
A delivery device for thin-film material deposition has at least first, second, and third inlet ports for receiving a common supply for a first, a second and a third gaseous material, respectively. Each of the first, second, and third elongated emissive channels allow gaseous fluid communication with one of corresponding first, second, and third inlet ports. The delivery device can be formed from apertured plates, superposed to define a network of interconnecting supply chambers and directing channels for routing each of the gaseous materials from its corresponding inlet port to a corresponding plurality of elongated emissive channels. The delivery device comprises a diffusing channel formed by a relief pattern between facing plates. Also disclosed is a process for thin film deposition. Finally, more generally, a flow diffuser and a corresponding method of diffusing flow is disclosed.
Abstract:
A single action press for forming a shell (50) used to make a can end includes a first tool (66) and an opposed second tool (68). The first tool includes a die center insert (70) that performs a forming operation on disc cut from a sheet of end material. The first tool is configured and arranged wherein force is supplied to the die center insert during the downstroke and force is removed from the die center insert at the bottom of the downstroke and at the start of the upstroke, to thereby enable the die center insert to disengage from the shell. One specific embodiment uses a die center piston (88) and compressed air to apply force to the die center insert. Another embodiment uses a cam (202) and cam follower (204) arrangement to remove axial forces at the bottom of the downstroke and either springs (210) or gas pressure to apply force to the die center insert during the downstroke. Actuators (84, 208) are provided in the first tool to reestablish downward forces on the die center insert by the time the top of the upstroke is reached so that the press cycle can be repeated.
Abstract:
The invention relates to fixing the position of a pull-tab to a sheet steel provided with a top surface (10) and surrounded by a folding edge (12). Said sheet steel cover is suitable for placing on the body of the can. A pull-tab (30;31,32,33) is arranged on a securing point (11) on the outside of the opening area (17). On the panel (10), an opening area is defined by an attenuation line (16). The pull-tab (30) comprises a pull section (32), an opening section (33) and an application section (31), the latter being applied in an essentially parallel manner to the pull-tab in relation to the panel (10). The pull-tab (30) is disposed whereby the open section thereof (33) lies over the opening area (17) when in the applied state. Approximately at least one edge (31c) of the placing section (31) projects a strip-shaped projection (21a,21b;20) which is formed from the panel (10) for limiting a pivoting movement ( alpha ) of the pull-tab (30) around a securing point (11).
Abstract:
A can end having a countersink bead (25), an inclined chuck (24) wall and a strong seam, resists distortion from its circular profile when subjected to thermal processing or when packaging carbonated beverages. This high hoop strength affects the manner in which the can end ultimately fails when placed under extreme abuse conditions, even if buckle pressure performance is within industry specified standards. The can end of the invention has control features introduced which control the failure mode whilst maintaining specified buckle pressure performance. In one embodiment, the control feature comprises expansion of the countersink bead to act as a trigger for local peaking, together with a groove in the chuck wall which prevents the peaking force from being concentrated at a single point which could result in leaking by the production of a pin hole.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an easy opening closure, comprising a closure (1) having a folding rim (2) and a circumferential score line (3) having a score residual (t) over the thickness of the closure (1) in the score line, enclosing a removable central closure part (4); and a tab (5) connected to the central closure part (4), which score line (3) has a pop zone in which the tap (5) pops asection of the central closure along the score line and the pop zone comprising a pop ignition zone adjacent to the tab, in clock-wise and anti-clock-wise direction subsequent tear zones in which using the tab (5) the central closure part (4) is teared off from the closure (1) along the score line (3) and eventually looses from the closure (1), wherein the tear zones comprise each a tear ignition zone adjacent the respective pop zone, and wherein the score residual (t) in the tear ignition zones is reduced relative to the score residual in the pop ignition zone, to a container, provided with such easy opening closure and to an apparatus for producing same.
Abstract:
A method of making a steel design tab with a commercial indicium of a beverage can provided with a cylindrical body containing the beverage, an end seamed with an upper portion of the cylindrical body and having a score line for allowing a portion of the end to be easily torn to free an opening through which the beverage is dispensed out, is provided with a step of painting a steel coil for the tab with a desired color, printing the commercial indicium of characters, images and letters represented with various kinds of colors on the painted surface of the steel coil for the tab, varnishing the printed surface of the steel coil for the tab, performing a pitch-align to ensure that the commercial indicium is located in an exact location within the tab which will be made, forming the pitch-aligned steel coil into a tab by a conversion press, applying a quick-drying paint on a cut cross-section of the steel coil for the tabs as an anticorrosive, stacking the tab on a center of a shell supplied from other place, and applying a quick-drying paint on portions of the tab at which the tab is separated from a skeleton.

A method for making a design tab for a beverage can is provided with a cylindrical body containing the beverage, an end seamed with an upper portion of the cylindrical body and having a score line for allowing a portion of the end to be easily torn to free an opening through which the beverage is dispensed out. The method comprisis the steps of painting an aluminum coil for the tab with desired color, printing the commercial indicium of characters, images and letters represented with various colors on the painted surface of the coil for the tab, varnishing the printed surface of the coil for tha tab, performing a pitch-align to exactly locate the varnished coil for the tab by adjusting the location of the coil for the tab, forming the aligned coil into a tab by a conversion press, and stacking the newly made tab on a center of a shell supplied from other place.
Abstract:
The present invention describes an improved beverage can end (2) which utilizes less material and has an improved internal buckle strength based on the geometric configuration of the chuck wall, (6), inner panel wall, (12) central panel (10) and reduced depth between the countersink (18) and crown (14) of a circular end wall (4).
Abstract:
A method of making a pressure-resistant easy-open end for a container is performed on a conventional easy-open end of the type that has a double-seaming portion, an end panel (60) and a safety fold (72). The safety fold as is conventional includes an intermediate panel (54) that is unitary with and overlies the end panel and that is connected to the end panel by a first bead (58), a top panel (56) that is unitary with and overlies the end panel and that is connected to the end panel by a second bead (52), and a transition region (57) that is unitary and connects the top panel to the double-seaming portion. The method involves performing an operation on the conventional end so that the top panel (56) is reformed to reside substantially within a second plane (80) and so that the first plane (74) and the second plane (80) intersect at the end panel at a location that is radially inward from said first bead (58). The result is a modified easy-open end that exhibits markedly improved resistance against pressure-induced failure.
