Abstract: A compact and inexpensive method and apparatus for illuminating and acquiring a digital image of a biometric feature such as a fingerprint, palm print, footprint, or some subset or multiple of such features. A source of illumination (11) is introduced into an exposed edge of a transparent optical window (13) that is essentially smooth and generally flat with spaced apart surfaces. The illumination propagates between the surfaces of a flat or slightly curved transparent window (13) via total internal reflection (15) to obliquely illuminate a biometric feature (12) when in contact with the window (13). A digital camera (17) views the obliquely illuminated biometric feature (12) to record an image of it which can then be compared with registered images for matching and control purposes.

Abstract: A floating power generation assembly has at least three floating units provided with power generation means and floating in a body of water. At least one of the three floating units is a tension leg platform. The assembly also comprises first anchors secured to a surface beneath the water, and first cables connecting the buoyant body to the first anchors. Second anchors are secured to the underwater surface and connected by second cables to the floating units. The floating units are arranged substantially at the vertices of at least one triangle or quadrilateral.

Abstract: An electro-optic display comprises a layer of solid electro-optic material; a backplane comprising at least one electrode; and an adhesive layer disposed between the layer of electro-optic material and the backplane and adhesively securing the layer of electro-optic material to the backplane, the adhesive layer comprising a thermally-activated cross-linking agent comprising an epoxidized vegetable oil fatty acid or an epoxidized ester of such a fatty acid. The cross-linking agent reduces void growth when the display is subjected to temperature changes.

Abstract: An electro-optic display comprises a bistable electro-optic medium, a plurality of pixel electrodes, with associated non-linear elements, and a common electrode, disposed on opposed sides of the electro-optic medium. The display has a writing mode, in which at least two different voltages are applied to different pixel electrodes, and a non-writing mode in which the voltages applied to the pixel electrodes are controlled so that any image previously written on the electro-optic medium is substantially maintained.
