Abstract: A manned vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aerial vehicle comprises: a body comprising a cockpit having pilot-operable controls; a propulsion system carried by the body to propel the body during flight; a control system comprising a sensing system, a processor, and memory storing program instructions configured to cause the processor to determine a state estimate of the aerial vehicle within a region, a repulsion vector based on a repulsion potential field model of the region and the state estimate, and a collision avoidance velocity vector based on the repulsion vector and the state estimate; determine an input vector indicative of an intended angular velocity and an intended thrust of the vehicle based on pilot-operable control inputs; determine a control vector based on the collision avoidance velocity vector and the input vector; and control the propulsion system such that the manned VTOL aerial vehicle avoids an object in the region.

Abstract: Some embodiments relate to a system for communicating with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aerial vehicles. An example system comprises: a central server system comprising: a central server system wireless communication system; at least one central server system processor; and central server system memory. The central server system memory stores program instructions accessible by the at least one central server system processor, and is configured to cause the at least one central server system processor to wirelessly transmit wireless information to one or more VTOL aerial vehicles using the central server system wireless communication system. The wireless information comprises an object state estimate and an object state estimate confidence metric. The object state estimate is indicative of a state of an object that is within a region; and the object state estimate confidence metric is indicative of an error associated with the object state estimate.

Abstract: A manned vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aerial vehicle (AV) comprising a body comprising a cockpit; a propulsion system carried by the body to propel the body during flight; pilot-operable controls accessible from the cockpit; a sensing system configured to generate sensor data associated with a region around the manned VTOL AV; a control system may utilise the sensor data and configured to enable control of the manned VTOL AV to be shared between a pilot and an autonomous piloting system; and program instructions to: determine a state estimate and a state estimate confidence metric; generate a three-dimensional point cloud of the region; generate a plurality of virtual particles within a three-dimensional model; compute a plurality of scores, each score being associated with one of the plurality of virtual particles; and update the state estimate based at least in part on the computed scores, thereby determining an updated state estimate.
