Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for inhibiting hydration of clays in drilling operations comprising the use of an aqueous based drilling fluid containing from 0.2 to 5 wt% of the clay hydration inhibitor of formula (I) R-(OPO 3 M2), (I) wherein x is a number from 2 to 6 and R is the hydrocarbyl group of a polyol having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms and containing from 2 to 10 hydroxyl groups, and being oxyalkylated with 3 to 15 moles of an alkylene oxide, and M is hydrogen, sodium, potassium, ammonium or an organically substituted ammonium cation, with the proviso that at least that one M is different from hydrogen.
