Abstract: The invention is a technique and apparatus for supporting random reads in files on the server side (415A-415N), without adding more software layers on top of the socket layer. In one embodiment, such a technique is implemented in a streaming architecture that is based on dividing or splitting a media file into multiple sub-files (1-N). The sub-files may exist on the different servers. Such servers are capable of streaming the sub-files to the client (405) that stitches or reassembles them together and provides them to a media player on the client machine.
