Abstract: The present invention relates to a hardened voyage data recorder. The data recorder comprises an inner capsule defining an interior cavity containing a data storage means. A thermal mass composition is surrounding the inner capsule, and an isolation material is surrounding the thermal mass composition. An outer capsule is surrounding the isolation material, which outer capsule is closed by a lid, said lid being arranged above and at a distance to the isolation material to thereby define a top cavity between the inside of the outer capsule lid and the isolation material. The top cavity contains a communication circuit board, where electronic communication circuitry is arranged on the communication circuit board. A mounting plate may be arranged above or on top of the isolation material, and the outer capsule lid may be arranged above and at a distance to the mounting plate thereby defining the top cavity between the inside of the outer capsule lid and the mounting plate. The data storage means may comprise a flash memory chip.
