A lighting apparatus comprises a light panel having a panel frame, and a plurality of LEDs or other light elements secured to the panel frame. Lenses and/or filters are adjusted in distance from the light elements, by for example moving the lenses/filters into different slot positions of the frame, to alter characteristics of the emitted light. Focal lenses, diffusion lenses, and color filters may be used individually or in combination. A compound lens includes lens elements having different characteristics arranged in a pattern. Through groupwise control of the intensity of the light elements, the different characteristics are emphasized or de-emphasized. The light panel may have an integrated battery, and may be be mounted on a stand. The panel may be modular, allowing larger panels to be constructed from smaller panels.

A battery operated LED lighting apparatus including: a battery outputting a battery voltage; a light emitting diode or array of light emitting diodes; and a power supply including a boost regulating circuit. The power supply being in communication with the battery and the light emitting diodes such that a constant voltage or constant current is supplied to the light emitting diodes as the battery discharges and the battery voltage falls below the output voltage. In a preferred embodiment the power supply further includes a buck regulator to maintain the proper output voltage when the battery voltage is greater than the output voltage.

The LED panel (750) or board is mated to a heat dissipating apparatus to provide active cooling and together forming an LED engine (100). The LED engine is mounted to a slider (780) allowing the LED engine to be adjusted within the housing with respect to the lens. Light shaping diffusion may be included on the housing. A power supply unit may also be included in the housing. When in electrical communication, the LED engine and power supply unit function as an integrated self-contained lighting apparatus. Optionally, the power supply may have an integrated dimmer switch, and may be capable of receiving PFC power or have an integrated battery unit.

A self-contained battery unit securably attaches to the outside of the panel frame. The light panel may have a dimmer switch, and may also be capable of receiving power from a source other than the self-contained battery unit. The lighting apparatus can be mounted to a camera or a stand. The lighting apparatus may include an effects generator in communication therewith which generates a continuous light or a flash of light from the LEDs or other light elements. Diffusion lenses or color gels may be integrated with or detachable from the light panel.

Specifically, the mounting feature includes inner locking portions to engage with the camera, or housing. The handheld device further includes a handle housing to secure at least a rotating membrane and a communication subsystem. The rotating membrane includes multiple switches. The handheld device receives a selection of a switch from a user of the handheld device. The handheld device conducts a lookup in a lookup table for a setting mapped to the selected switch. The communication subsystem transmits a command to the camera, the command including the setting.
