Abstract: A fuel cell membrane electrode assembly having: a proton exchange membrane, an anode catalyst coating on one side of the membrane, and a cathode catalyst coating on the other side of the membrane. The cathode catalyst coating has at least two carbon catalyst layers, with a low porosity layer adjacent to a high porosity layer. The high porosity layers have a volume fraction that is higher than the volume fraction of the low porosity layers.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for developing a self-contained conductivity concentration profiler (CCP) system for standalone coastal and ocean deployment. A self-contained CCP system in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure can measure sediment concentration profiles and track instantaneous bed levels in sandy environments to enable better understanding of small-scale sediment transport processes in the coastal and nearshore marine environment. A self-contained CCP system in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure can support unmanned and standalone deployment configuration, allowing for operation in previously unattainable areas of interest in which small-scale sediment transport processes are important but poorly understood.

Abstract: A tunable spectral filter comprising a phase change material is incorporated into a multilayered dielectric structure. The dielectric permittivity, and thus the filter properties, of the structure can be modified by producing a change in the phase change material, e.g., causing a metal- insulator transition. By controllably causing such a change in the dielectric permittivity of the phase change material, the spectral transmittance and reflectance of the structure, and thus its filter properties, can be modified to provide a predetermined transmittance or reflectance of electromagnetic radiation incident on the structure. In preferred embodiments, the phase change material layer is a vanadium dioxide (VO2) film formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD).

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of: providing a hydrogenated sp 2 carbon allotrope, and releasing hydrogen gas from the carbon allotrope. The method may be used an apparatus having: a vessel for containing the hydrogenated sp 2 carbon allotrope, a fuel cell capable of using hydrogen gas a fuel, and a tube for transporting hydrogen gas from the vessel to the fuel cell. The carbon allotrope may be made by: providing a mixture of an sp 2 carbon allotrope and liquid ammonia, adding an alkali metal to the mixture, and sonicating the mixture to form a hydrogenated form of the carbon allotrope. The hydrogenated carbon can be at least 3.5 wt% hydrogen covalently bound to the carbon.

The plurality of modulated antenna patterns and the corresponding pluraiity of antenna temperatures are fed into a compressive sensing imaging algorithm.

Abstract: A technique is described to deterministically tune the emission frequency of individual semiconductor photon sources, for example quantum dots. A focused laser is directed at a film of material that changes form when heated (for example, a phase change material that undergoes change between crystal and amorphous forms) overlaid on a photonic membrane that includes the photon sources. The laser causes a localized change in form in the film, resulting in a change in emission frequency of a photon source.
