A method of inactivating pathogens present in blood products containing plasma protein and/or in whole blood intended for blood transfusion. In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, the method comprises treating the whole blood or blood product with formaldehyde in a concentration of about 0.05 %-0.25 %, preferably about 0.1 %-0.2 % and more preferably about 0.15 %, by weight of the whole blood or blood product so as to inactivate any pathogens present therewithin. The present invention is also directed to a method of treating a patient in need of whole blood or a blood constituent which comprises treating a sample of whole blood or a blood product comprising the blood constituent and plasma protein with formaldehyde in the manner described above and then administering the formaldehyde-treated blood or blood constituent to the patient in need thereof. Preferably, after the treating step and prior to the administering step, residual formaldehyde is removed from the blood sample.

Method for inactivating non-enveloped viruses using a viricide-potentiating agent. In a preferred embodiment, the method may be used to inactivate non-enveloped viruses present within a sample of whole blood or a blood product and comprises (a) adding to the blood sample a photoactivatable viricide, such as a psoralen, hypericin, methylene blue, toluidine blue or the like, which, when activated, is effective in inactivating enveloped viruses; (b) adding to the blood sample a viricide-potentiating chemical agent that increases the sensitivity of non-enveloped viruses to the activated viricide; and (c) activating the photoactivatable viricide. Preferably, the viricide-potentiating chemical agent includes a first moiety which possesses an affinity for a component of the non-enveloped virus and a second moiety which includes a lipid tail, the first and second moieties being structurally interrelated so that, when the first moiety becomes associated with a component of the non-enveloped virus, the second moiety penetrates or at least partially surrounds the viral capsid of the non-enveloped virus. Examples of the chemical agent include cationic lipopolyamines, such as dioctadecylamidoglycylspermine.

One type of depth filter comprises a laid textile web which has been modified to attach a ligand for viral inactivating agents, a ligand for leukocytes, or ligands for both. An exemplary membrane comprises a polyethersulfone membrane that has been similarly modified. Filter devices for simultaneously removing leukocytes and viral inactivating agents from whole blood or blood fractions are also disclosed. One type of device comprises (1) a housing surrounding (2) activated carbon and (3) a mechanically stable polymeric material which may optionally be modified to attach a ligand for leukocytes. General methods for removing leukocytes and rival inactivating agents from blood are also disclosed.
