Abstract: The invention provides a novel method of treating a mineral sample comprising the steps of: introducing a comminuted mineral sample together with a flux into a reaction vessel, the flux including a collector agent adapted during fusion to collect a constituent of the mineral sample; causing the flux and mineral sample to fuse to form a molten slag and molten collector agent; preheating a separation vessel; introducing the molten slag and molten collector agent into the preheated separation vessel; and separating the molten slag from the molten collector agent.

Abstract: The invention provides a furnace suitable for treating mineral samples contained in a crucible comprising an outer wall structure enclosing an interior furnace space preferably an annular space which is adapted to be heated by heating means, a moving carrier within the interior furnace space which is adapted to carry a crucible or the like along a predetermined pathway preferably a circular pathway within the interior furnace space, the moving carrier preferably comprising a rotating ring member; and access means for locating and retrieving a crucible on and from the carrier.

Abstract: The invention provides a separating vessel (10) suitable for use in the treatment of a mineral sample wherein a molten slag (11) is separated from a molten collector material (12) comprising a container defining an interior cavity (13) for receiving the molten materials (11,12), an outlet aperture (14) leading from the interior cavity to the exterior of the container, and a separating surface (15) associated with the outlet aperture (14) which is shaped to cause droplets of flux (11a) to be carried along such surface, while droplets of collector material (12a) drip off such surface by the force of gravity.
