Abstract: Methods are described for obtaining functional gene and regulatory sequences from complex populations of microorganisms, termed a 'plethogenome'. These methods are based on random sequencing of genetic material isolated from an ensemble of organisms, followed by computer analysis to assign a putative function to each sequence. These assignments can be confirmed by subsequent activity screening. The plethogenomic sequence database and corresponding clone library can be used to discover and manufacture new industrial enzymes and pharmaceuticals.
