Abstract:
Briefly, the present invention provides an optical disc and method for distributing protected content. Promotional content is provided on the disc in an area that is freely accessible by a consumer. The disk also has commercial content, such as a movie, that is accessible only after the consumer completes an activation process. More specifically, the commercial content is in an area of the disc protected by an optical shutter. In its initial state, the shutter interferes with the player's ability to read the protected data. But, after the activation process, the protected data is fully accessible. In this way, a single optical disc may be used to distribute free promotional content, as well as facilitate the selling of commercially valuable content.
Abstract:
A method and system is provided for distributing media such as optical discs. In one example, a set of discs is provided, with at least one of the discs being unreadable in an associated disc player. In this way, a consumer may use and enjoy any readable disc, but must take additional steps to activate the unreadable disc. When the consumer desires to activate the disc, the unreadable disc is placed near an activation device. The activation device uses and RF communication to read an ID from the unreadable disc. The activation device retrieves authorization data and confirms that the disc is in condition for activation. Provided that the disc is authorized for activation, the authorization data is transmitted to the disc using the RF communication. The disc has logic to confirm and complete the activation process, and may switch an optical shutter to activate the disc by making its content readable in the associated disc player. By distributing unreadable discs that can be activated only under defined requirements, content owners are able to freely distribute discs, while maintaining control of their content. For example, a consumer may be provided a library of unreadable discs, and, after approval by to the content owner, the consumer can activate selected discs.
Abstract:
An integrated circuit device is provided for attachment to a target. The integrated circuit is controllable to effect an action at the target, such as activating or deactivating the usefulness of the target. The integrated circuit has a logic and memory section connected to an antenna for receiving communications from an associated reader or scanner. The integrated circuit also has a component constructed to transition from a first state to a permanent second state. The integrated circuit also stores a hidden secret kill code, and upon receiving a matching kill code from the reader, permanently transitions the component to its second state. When the component is in the permanent second state, the integrated circuit is incapable of effecting the action on the target. The integrated circuit may also verify its function is disabled, and report a kill confirmation to the reader.
Abstract:
An optical disc is provided with an associated optical shutter. In a first state, the optical media interferes with the ability of an interrogating laser beam to read data from the optical media, and in a second state, the optical media is substantially transparent, enabling the laser beam to read the disc. A powering circuit is used to cause the optical shutter to transition from a first state to the second state. In one example, an integrated circuit acts as the powering circuit, as well as providing logic and processing functions. The integrated circuit also couples to an RF antenna, enabling the integrated circuit to communicate with an associated RP scanning device. The optical shutter may take various geometric shapes, and typically has an electrochromic material for facilitating state change. The electrochromic device may be constructed to hold persistently the desired optical state. In this way, the desired optical state is maintained without application of external power.
Abstract:
A system is provided for authenticating and securing product transactions. An integrated circuit is attached to a target, such as an optical disc or electronic device. The integrated circuit has an RF transceiver that is capable of establishing communication with an associated reading device. The integrated circuit also has a hidden memory, which can not be read externally, and a user memory. The hidden memory stores an authentication message, while the user memory stores readable authentication information. The hidden authentication message and the authentication information are related through a cryptographic process. However, even though the integrated circuit benefits from the cryptographic security, the integrated circuit only operates relatively simple logic operations. In this way, a highly secure transaction is enabled without requiring significant processing power or time at the integrated circuit. When the integrated circuit is placed near the reader, the reader reads the authentication information, and with the cooperation of a network operation center, uses the authentication information to derive an activation code. The reader passes the activation code to the integrated circuit, which compares the activation code to its hidden activation message. If they have a prope relationship, the communication has been authenticated, and the integrated circuit proceeds to perform an action.
Abstract:
A radio frequency controller device enables the utility of a target to be controlled using an RF communication. The radio frequency controller device has a switch that is set to a defined state responsive to the RF communication. More particularly, conditional logic circuitry uses the RF communication to determine if the target's utility should be changed, and sets the state of the switch accordingly. The radio frequency controller device also has a target interface that allows the target to determine the state of the switch, and based on the state of the switch, a different utility will be available for the target. The radio frequency controller device also has an antenna for the RF communication, as well as a demodulator/modulator circuit. When used to control the utility of an electrical or electronic device, the radio frequency controller device has a low-power circuit portion that is used to set the state of the switch responsive to the RF communication, and also has a full power circuit portion that communicates with the target. In this way, the state of the switch may be set when the target is in a power-off condition, and the target is able to determine the state of the switch when the target is activated.
Abstract:
A system and method for wireless activation of a target. A communication device transmits an ID associated with the target to a network operations center. The network operations center provides an activation signal to the communication device. The communication device wirelessly transmits an acoustic activation signal to a nearby activation device. The activation device is positioned proximate the target and causes a change in at least one physical property of the target. The target may be an optical media containing an electrochromic material with optical properties that change on application of an electric signal.
Abstract:
A method and system is provided for enabling electronic transactions via a personal device (e.g., a cellular phone). A user initiates a transaction with a second party, both of whom are located in a point-of-presence (POP), by establishing communication between the personal device and a network operations center (NOC). The personal device and NOC communicate via a wide area communication link. The personal device communicates with a POP device for the second party via a local area communication link. The POP device communicates with the NOC via the personal device, which bridges the wide area communication link with the local area communication link. The personal device and POP device provide pertinent information for the transaction to the NOC. The NOC may also access other pertinent information stored for the user and/or the second party. The NOC implements decision rules appropriate for the transaction and provides results for the transaction.

Abstract:
A mobile wireless device is provided that can communicate on a public telecommunication network using a known communication standard. The wireless device is also constructed to establish communication to an activatable product using a local communication path, which may be, for example, a near field communication or RFID communication. The activatable target may an optical disc or electronic product, for example. The activatable product is provided in a disabled state, so that the product can not be used for its intended purpose. For example, the optical disc may not play in its associated player, and the electronic device may not power up. When it is desired to activate the product, the mobile wireless device is positioned proximate the product. Using the local communication path, the wireless device receives a message from an RF circuit on the activatable product. The message may hold identification or other information regarding the activatable produce. The wireless device connects to a network operation center over the public telecommunications network to obtain an activation key for the activatable device. The wireless device again uses the local communication path to transmit the activation key to the activatable target, and the RF circuit enables the functionality of the product.
