Abstract: A hose coupling (5) having a generally tubular nipple (10) for separate fixed attachment with one or more generally cylindrical shells (35, 41a, 41b, 50, 75, 80, 85). The nipple (10) has a longitudinal axis, a first end (12), a second end (13), a shell receiving portion (20) located between the first (12) and second (13) ends, and a longitudinal through bore (15). The shell receiving portion (20) fixedly receives an end portion of one or more generally cylindrical shells (35, 41a, 41b, 50, 75, 80, 85), and has a series of circumferential grooves with a base portion (26, 28, 32), a first substantially vertically oriented sidewall (31, 29, 25) adjacent the base portion (26, 28, 32), and a second substantially vertically oriented sidewall (29, 27, 27), positioned adjacent the base portion (26, 28, 32) on the side opposite of the first sidewall (31, 29, 25) and has a maximum radial extent less than the first sidewall (31, 29, 25).
