Abstract: This invention relates to a method of removing iron and manganese values and recovering cobalt values from a solution containing iron values, manganese values, cobalt values, and optionally other metal values. The method includes the step of introducing into the solution a gas mixture of sulphur dioxide and air or sulphur dioxide and oxygen so as in a single step to oxidise the iron values from the ferrous to the ferric state and to oxidise the manganese values from the manganous to the manganic state and then to precipitate the iron values as ferric oxide/hydroxide and to precipitate the manganese values as manganic oxide, leaving the cobalt values in solution.
