A door skin includes an interior surface, an exterior surface, at least one contoured panel portion establishing a protrusion extending on the interior surface and an opposite depression extending into the exterior surface, and fire retardant material such as intumescent material applied to at least one of the protrusion or the depression and no more than about 20 percent by surface area of the remainders of the interior surface excluding the protrusion and the exterior surface excluding the depression. The process of annealing comprises the step of heating the door skin, alone or in combination with other parts of the door assembly, above the glass transition temperature yet below the thermal degradation temperature of the thermoset binder for a sufficient amount of time to cause release internal stresses in the door skin, then the step of cooling the door skin.

Each of the door skins has an opening therethrough for receiving a glass insert and a flange portion. Distal ends of the flange portions of the first and second door skins engage each other in an overlapping relationship by the expansion pressure of the expanded foam. The door further comprises a glazing rim member having a leg portion snap-locked between the flange portions of the first and second door skins. The method for assembling the door comprises the steps of filling the cavity between the door skins with foam material, then inserting the glass insert through the openings in the door skins and mounting the glazing rim member to the first door skin by snap-locking between the flange portions of the first and second door skins.
