Abstract: A sheet processing apparatus for efficiently processing sheets of paper, comprising a sheet hopper, a discriminator for checking sheets in the hopper, and a mechanism for returning sheets of paper having predetermined features (such as those not having a thread and those having unsuitable sizes) without supplying them to the discriminator. According to this apparatus, the discriminator is operated more efficiently because it need not handle sheets that can be easily found to be irregular. Because such sheets of paper are not conveyed to the discriminator, the probability of jamming can be reduced.
