Abstract: An electrical wire has a stranded copper conductor and an adherent electrically insulating refractory coating that extends around the conductor but not around the individual strands. The conductor is provided with at least one intermediate layer around the individual strands that is formed from a metal that acts as a barrier to diffusion of copper or oxygen. Preferably the intermediate layer has a thickness of at least 1.5 micrometres and/or an additional metal layer is present. The wires may be used in the manufacture of circuit or signal integrity cables and exhibit improved high temperature performance.

Abstract: An article of manufacture formed at least partly from copper, e.g. an electrical wire, has an adherent electrically insulating refractory layer deposited thereon preferably by a sputtering process. The article is also provided with an intermediate metal layer of thickness of at least 1.1 micrometres that acts either as a barrier to diffusion of copper or oxygen or has a modulus lower than that of copper. Alternatively more than one intermediate layer may be present in which case thinner layers may be used. The articles may be used as circuit or signal integrity cables and exhibit improved high temperature performance.
