Abstract: Apparatus (101 ) for lifting items comprises a tube (102) configured to be connected to a vacuum source (150). The tube (102) has a first end part (103) and a second end part (104) configured to be moveable towards the first end part (103) in dependence upon pressure within the tube (102). The apparatus (101 ) also includes at least one flexible member (105) having a first end (106) connected to the second end part (104) of the tube (102) and a second end (107) for connecting to a coupling device (108) for coupling the flexible member to an item. A guide means (109) is arranged to support the at least one flexible member (105) so that the at least one flexible member (105) extends around the guide means (109) and extends along a first line to one side of the guide means (109) and along a second line to the other side of the guide means (109). The apparatus (101 ) has a support structure (110) for supporting the tube (102) above a surface and a slide mechanism (111 ) on which the tube is mounted. The slide mechanism (111 ) is configured to enable the tube (102) to slide with respect to the support structure (110) so that the first end part (103) and second end part (104) of the tube (102) are moveable with respect to the support structure (110).
