Abstract:
A method and quench apparatus for melt spinning of continuous polymeric filaments having enhanced uniformity of denier and tenacity. Polymeric filaments are extruded from a molten polymeric material (not shown) through the capillaries (not shown) of a spinneret (2). The filament bundle (12) emerging from the spinneret is passed through a quench apparatus (Ia) located underneath the spinneret so as to cool the filament bundle by a cooling gas. A finish agent is applied to the filament bundle by a finish applicator (14) located in the path of the filament bundle. The filament bundle exiting the quench apparatus is taken on a take up device (17). The entraining gas and filament bundle are guided towards the finish applicator by a baffle device (11) located in the path of the filament bundle spaced from the finish applicator so as to stabilize the filament bundle towards the finish applicator and improve finish coverage on the filament bundle and uniformity of denier and tenacity of the filaments (Fig 1).
