The invention concerns a device for treating body tissue and/or crushing calculi by means of acoustic energy, such as shock, pressure or ultrasonic waves. The device comprises: a sound-generating unit which produces acoustic waves; optionally a downstream focusing unit for the acoustic waves; and a transmission medium for guiding the acoustic waves generated by the sound-generating unit to the body. The device according to the invention is characterized in that the shape of the interface and/or the conditions at the interface between the transmission medium and the body are such that energy is transmitted by the sound-generating unit into the body without substantial deviations from the desired extent of diffusion.

The device has a sound-generation unit controlled by a control unit to generate acoustic waves at a particular frequency and energy and a focussing unit which focusses the generated waves in a given focal range. The invention is characterized by the fact that the sound-generation unit (2) has a radiant surface which, as in the prior art, is plane or only slightly curved so that the waves generated are essentially plane waves. The invention is further characterized by the fact that the focussing unit (5) is mounted in a fixed position with respect to the sound-generation unit and has a Fresnel-lens-like structure on the sound-entry and/or sound exit surface.

The device is characterized by the aiming arrangement projecting on the X-ray receiver a figure that is independent of the location of the X-ray source and receiver, and by the fact that the connecting line between the X-ray source and the centre of the projected figure always extends through a fixed point in space outside the aiming arrangement.
