Abstract: The present invention relates to zwitterionic compounds which are useful as catalysts for the preparation of organic esters. In particular, the present invention relates to sulfonic acid compounds, such as arenesulfonic acid compounds, including a nitrogen atom in their structure and zwitterionic forms thereof, being useful as catalysts for esterification reactions. The present invention also relates to processes for making such compounds. The present invention also relates to esterification processes catalysed by such zwitterionic compounds. In particular, the present invention relates to processes for the preparation of organic esters wherein a zwitterionic catalyst may be recycled and re-used a significant number of times without losing its catalytic activity and/or selectivity.
