Abstract: An optical ferrule assembly includes a hybrid optical ferrule having a glass portion assembled to a polymeric portion. The polymeric portion includes a groove for receiving and supporting an optical fiber having opposing open front and back ends. A light redirecting member includes an input surface for receiving light from the optical fiber and a light redirecting side. The open back end of the groove and the input surface define a recessed region therebetween. The glass portion includes an optically transparent glass insert disposed in the recessed region conforming in shape to an internal shape of the recessed region. An optical fiber is received and supported in the groove. The optical fiber includes a fiber end laser welded to the glass insert so that a central light ray from the optical fiber propagates through the glass insert before being received and redirected by the light redirecting side.

Abstract: An optical ferrule assembly includes a ferrule body having an attachment area, an input surface, and a light redirecting side. The attachment area includes a second attachment area portion disposed between a first attachment area portion and the input surface. The second attachment area portion includes a plurality of substantially parallel grooves. A plurality of optical fibers are received by and attached to the attachment area. Each of the optical fibers includes a core surrounded by a buffer stripped between a buffer-end location and a free end of the fiber. An unstripped fiber section is disposed in the first attachment area portion, and the stripped fiber section is disposed in one of the grooves in the second attachment area portion. A cover is assembled to the ferrule body, covering and making physical contact with at least portions of the stripped fiber sections of the optical fibers.

Abstract: An optical connector assembly includes first and second optical ferrules. Each of the first and second optical ferrules includes a front portion extending forwardly from a rear portion. The rear portion includes a top side and a bottom side. The bottom side of the rear portion defines a recessed portion. The first and second optical ferrules mate with each other such that the front portion of each of the first and second ferrules is disposed in the recessed portion of the other one of the first and second ferrules. Discrete retainers are assembled to opposite ends of the mated first and second ferrules. Each of the retainers defines a resilient portion resiliently forcing the front portion of one of the first and second mated ferrules against the other one of the first and second optical ferrules.

Abstract: An optical connector includes a body including a first lateral surface and a second lateral surface opposite to the first lateral surface. The body defines a plurality of passages that are spaced apart from each other and extend at least partly along a length of the body from the first lateral surface. The passages are configured to at least partly receive corresponding optical fibers of an optical cable. The connector further includes a plurality of microlenses that are spaced apart from each other and are disposed on the second lateral surface. The microlenses are aligned to the passages in a one-to-one correspondence, such that light may be transmitted between the microlenses and the corresponding optical fibers.

Abstract: An optical connector includes a housing and an optical ferrule configured to move relative to the housing. The optical ferrule is configured to mate with a mating optical connector which includes a mating housing and a mating optical ferrule fixed relative to the mating housing. The housing includes at least one first engagement feature for engaging a corresponding first mating engagement feature of the mating housing. The optical ferrule includes an input surface for receiving and transmitting a central light ray from an optical fiber, and a light redirecting side for receiving the central light ray and redirecting it along a different second direction, until it exits the optical ferrule through an output surface. When the optical connector moves to a full mating position relative to the mating optical connector, the transition causes the optical ferrule to move relative to the housing.

Abstract: An optical ferrule configured to move along a mating direction to mate with a mating optical ferrule. The optical ferrule includes an attachment portion for receiving and securing one or more optical waveguides. First and second engagement portions are formed integrally with the optical ferrule and spaced apart from each other along the mating direction. First and second engagement portions are formed integrally with the mating optical ferrule and spaced apart from each other along the mating direction. When the optical ferrule mates with the mating optical ferrule, the first and second engagement portions of the optical ferrule engage the respective second and first engagement portions of the mating optical ferrule. The engagement of the engagement portions of the optical ferrules prevents each of the optical ferules from moving relative to the other optical ferrule along at least mutually orthogonal first and second directions orthogonal to the mating direction.

Abstract: An optical ferrule (200) includes a top major surface (10) and a bottom major surface (70) opposite the top major surface (10). The redirected central light ray (53) exits the optical ferrule (200) and enters the mating optical ferrule (300) through the contact or near contact interface (71).

Abstract: An optical ferrule includes a ferrule body having a plurality of first grooves extending along, and spaced apart from a plurality of second grooves, along a first direction. Each of the pluralities of first and second grooves are arranged along an orthogonal second direction and are correspondingly aligned with each other.
