Abstract: The present invention relates to a unified messaging and communication system which is more convenient and cost effective. This system advantageously combines or makes use of existing communication channels or networks. Part of the system and method relies on an intermediate leg of the distribution network being an INTERNET segment. Telephone communication is typically used for initial or final legs. Voice mail, E-mail, facsimiles and real time voice telephone communications are completed by the system. Mail communications may be centralized and retrieval of messages can be accomplished using one of a number of separate and distinct approaches. Thus, INTERNET can be used to form global voice mail and facsimile mail systems.

Abstract: A system for effectively combining a personal computing device (11) equipped with a facsimile modem with a service bureau (1) via a facsimile transmission initiated by the computing device. The service bureau assigns a facsimile telephone address (5) to each computing device (11), which, when the telephone address is used, results in a communication with the service bureau (1) which can receive the information and temporarily store the same. The service bureau (1) and personal computing device (11) must carry out a particular cooperation whereby the personal computing device (11) contacts the service bureau via its facsimile modem whereafter they cooperate to manipulate the facsimile modem to allow the subsequent receipt of a facsimile-compatible transmission. The facsimile-compatible transmission may contain conventional facsimile image data, digitized voice, electronic mail, text, video, spreadsheet, database, or any other information types.

Abstract: An improved data transmission system (2) which uses the telephone system (4) for transmitting information between data transmitting/receiving devices (16, 18) via a process intermediary (6) is taught wherein at least some of the data transmitting/receiving devices (18) can be actuated by a non-telephone actuation signal controlled by the process intermediary (6). Telephone number addresses (10) are obtained by the process intermediary (6) and assigned to uniquely identify non-telephone actuatable data transmitting/receiving devices (18). The telephone number addresses (10) when used to transmit data to the assigned data transmitting/receiving device (18) results in the transmitted data being received by the process intermediary (6) and forwarded to the appropriate data transmitting/receiving device (18) by actuating the device (18) by means of a non-telephone actuation signal. This actuation signal causes the device (18) to initiate a telephone communication with the process intermediary (6) and thereby receive the transmitted data. In this way, the transmission of data to the data transmitting/receiving device (18) identified by a telephone number address (10) is essentially transparent to the originating data transmitting/receiving device (16, 18).

Abstract: A system, according to the present invention, provides temporary facsimile services to facsimile machines provided in hotel rooms. The system includes an intermediary having a host of direct in-dial telephone numbers which can be selectively activated and assigned to any one facsimile machine of a plurality of facsimile machines. The facsimile machines can be selectively authorized by assigning thereto for a temporary period a direct in-dial telephone number from the host of direct in-dial numbers of the intermediary. The intermediary activates the direct in-dial number whereafter the authorized facsimile machine is capable of receiving transmissions sent to the direct in-dial telephone number via the intermediary. The system maintains the direct in-dial number activated until the expiry of the temporary period and thereafter deactivates the direct in-dial number. The direct in-dial number is maintained deactivated for a down period of time whereby any facsimile transmissions sent to the direct in-dial number during the down period of time is not received. In this way, provision is made not to receive any transmissions to the direct in-dial number during any down period whereby the guest is ensured transmissions destined for the particular guest are not received immediately after his departure from the hotel.
