Abstract: The present invention relates to a new polymer, a process for making it and its use as thickening agent (also called thickener). The polymer comprises repeating units derived from acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid, repeating units derived from a monomer which is, in a wider sense, an ethoxylated or propoxylated fatty alcohol substituted with a hydrophobic moiety, repeating units derived from vinyl pyrrolidone and repeating units derived from 1-vinyl imidazole.
