Abstract: Process for making a partially coated electrode active material wherein said process comprises the following steps: (a) providing an electrode active material according to general formula Li 1+x TM 1-x 0 2 , wherein TM is Ni and at least one of Co and Mn, and, optionally, at least one element selected from Al, Mg, Ba, B, and transition metals other than Ni, Co, and Mn, and x is in the range of from -0.05 to 0.2, (b) treating said electrode active material with a compound according to the general formula (H 2 AI-OR 1 ) 2 wherein R 1 is selected from C 2 -C 6 -alkyl, followed by an after-treatment step selected from (c) treating the material obtained from step (b) with an oxidizing agent, (d) treating the material obtained from step (b) with HP, and (e) treating the material obtained from step (b) with a phosphorus-bearing reagent selected from H 3 PO 4 , fluorophosphoric acid and difluorophosphoric acid.
