Abstract: Process for making a partially coated electrode active material wherein said process comprises the following steps: (a) Providing an electrode active material according to general formula Li 1+x TM 1-x O 2 , wherein TM is Ni and, optionally, at least one of Co and Mn, and, optionally, at least one element selected from Al, Mg, Ba and B, transition metals other than Ni, Co, and Mn, and x is in the range of from zero to 0.2, wherein at least 50 mole-% of the transition metal of TM is Ni, (b) treating said electrode active material with an aqueous medium, (c) partially removing water by solid-liquid separation method, (d) treating the residue with a compound of Me, Me being selected from at least one of aluminum, boron, phosphorus, antimony, magnesium, vanadium, and tellurium, and (e) treating the residue thermally.

Abstract: Process for the manufacture of a coated cathode active material comprising the steps of (a) providing a particulate electrode active material according to general formula Li1+xTM1-xO2, wherein TM is Ni and, optionally, at least one of Co and Mn, and, optionally, at least one element selected from Al, Mg, and Ba, transition metals other than Ni, Co, and Mn, and x is in the range of from zero to 0.2, wherein at least 50 mole-% of the transition metal of TM is Ni, (b) treating said particulate electrode active material with an aqueous solution or slurry of atleast one compound of Al, Sb, or of at least one heteropoly acid or of its respective ammonium or lithium salt or salt of Al, Ga, In, or Ba, thereby depositing at least one elementselected from Al, Sb, B, Mo, W, Si and P on the surface of said particulate electrode active material, (c) removing the water by filtration, (d) adding at least one aqueous solution of a compound of Al or B or Sb, to the solid residueobtained from step (c), thereby depositing at least one element selected from Al, B and Sbon the surface of said solid residue from step (c), and (e) treating the residue obtained from step (d) thermally.

Abstract: Process for the manufacture of a cathode active material comprising the steps of (a) providing a particulate electrode active material according to general formula Li1+xTM1-xO2, wherein TM is Ni and, optionally, at least one element selected from Al, Mg, Ba, and transition metals other than Ni, and x is in the range of from -0.05 to 0.2, wherein at least 50mole-% of TM is Ni, (b) adding an aqueous medium that contains LiOH in dissolved form to the particulate electrode active material provided in step (a), and (c) removing the liquid phase by a solid-liquid separation method, and (d) at least partially recycling the liquid phase from step (c) for a treatment step in analogy to step (b).
