Abstract: This invention relates to an energy conversion system (1) of the type used in small scale installations producing no more than 0.5Mw electric, 3Mw thermal energy output. The energy conversion system comprises a fluidized bed unit, a by-product fuel feed system, a heat exchanger, an exhaust filter and a negative pressure system. In combination, these provide a compact system capable of use with small amounts of by-product fuel that will adequately treat the by-product fuel so that it does not pose an environmental hazard. The energy conversion system thermally treats by-product and harnesses the heat generated by thermally treating the by-product. The harnessed heat may be used to produce steam or electricity and the heat, steam or electricity can be used in the operation of the installation thereby reducing the overhead operation costs of the small scale installation.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a by-product fuel delivery assembly (5) for delivering by-product fuel to a fluidised bed unit (3), the by-product fuel delivery assembly comprising a fuel hopper (25), a fuel conveyer (29) and a fuel metering device (27). The fuel hopper comprises a fuel feed mechanism (71) that comprises a plurality of laterally arranged push bars (55) and a plurality of laterally arranged stop bars (57). The push bars and stop bars co-operate to feed by-product fuel sitting on the base of the fuel hopper along the base of the fuel hopper towards the discharge slot (59) of the fuel hopper and provides a simple, effective, low-cost and low maintenance solution to the problem of feeding by-product fuel from the fuel hopper. The invention is also directed to embodiments of the fuel conveyer using a link chain (95) and a fuel metering unit using a pair of contra rotating fuel feed augers (75, 77).

Abstract: This invention relates to a fluidised bed unit for use in thermally treating a by-product. The unit forms part of an energy conversion system that is suitable for installation on a farm or small scale installation that handles the by-product. The unit comprises a furnace having a fuel charging inlet, a furnace sump for storing fluidised bed media, a clinker extraction unit mounted in the sump adjacent the base of the sump for removing clinkers from the fluidised bed media through a sump discharge aperture, a burner unit and an air introducer assembly comprising a forced draught fan, a single air box coupled to the forced draught fan and a plurality of nozzles fed by the air box. The fluidised bed unit is compact, relatively simple to maintain and commercially viable so that it may be installed on a farm or in a processing plant to process a by-product.
