Abstract: The present invention relates to novel esterases, more particularly to esterase variants having improved activity and/or improved thermostability compared to the parent esterase of SEQ ID N°1, SEQ ID N°2 or SEQ ID N°3 in acidic conditions and the uses thereof for degrading polyester containing material, such as plastic products. The esterases of the invention are particularly suited to degrade polyethylene terephthalate, and material containing polyethylene terephthalate in acidic conditions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of specific enzymes, more particularly of specific esterases having a polyester degrading activity, for the degradation of polyester or polyester containing material in acidic conditions at a pH between 3 and 6. The present invention also relates to a process for degrading polyester or polyester containing material, such as plastic products comprises a step of enzymatic depolymerization implemented in acidic conditions at a pH between 3 and 6. The process of the invention is particularly suited to degrade polyethylene terephthalate, and polyethylene terephthalate containing material.
