Abstract: A skid steer loader (10) has a rear mounted engine compartment (16) and a tailgate (48) that pivots about a generally upright axis (46), the tailgate (48) in turn carries an engine cover panel (60) that is pivoted to the tailgate (48) about a horizontal axis. When the tailgate (48) is closed, the engine cover panel (60) overlies the loader engine compartment (16) and other components for the skid steer loader (10), and provides protection and covers such components. The engine cover panel (60) is made so that it will move upwardly for access to the components and also swings away with the tailgate (48) for access to the engine compartment (16).
