Display controllers and driving methods related to those in US 2013/0194250. include (a) a display controller having an update buffer, means for removing from the update buffer pixels not requiring updating, and means to ensure that pixels having certain special states are not removed from the update buffer; (b) driving a bistable display wherein, in a pixel undergoing a white-to-white transition and lying adjacent another pixel undergoing a visible transition, there is applied to the pixel balanced pulse pairs and a one top-off pulse; (c) driving a bistable display by overlaying a non-rectangular item over a pre-existing image content and then removing the item, where only pixels in the region of the item perform transitions; and (d) driving a bistable display in which background pixels not undergoing an optical change are refreshed to correct optical state drift.
Abstract:
Improved electrophoretic media including a first particle of a first polarity and three particles of the opposite polarity, wherein the first particle and optionally one of the particles of the opposite polarity undergo a diminution of electrophoretic mobility with increased electric field. Such electrophoretic media enable full-color displays with very fast updates between white and black pixels.

Abstract:
The performance of an electro-optic display, for example, a bistable electro-optic display, can be improved by modifying the frame rate of a base waveform used to drive a transition between gray states. Such modifications permit fine control of gray levels with reduced artifacts. The described methods require less memory to store all of the waveforms needed to achieve good performance of an electro-optic display over a range of temperatures.
Abstract:
This invention provides methods of and related apparatus for driving an electro-optic display having a plurality of pixels to display white text on a black background ("dark mode") while reducing edge artifacts, ghosting and flashy updates. The present invention reduces the accumulation of edge artifacts by applying a special waveform transition to edge regions according to an algorithm along with methods to manage the DC imbalance introduced by the special transition. Edge artifact clearing may be achieved by identifying specific edge pixels to receive a special transition called an inverted top-off pulse ("iTop Pulse") and, since the iTop Pulse is DC imbalanced, to subsequently discharge remnant voltage from the display. This invention further provides methods of and related apparatus for driving an electro-optic display having a plurality of pixels to display white text on a black background ("dark mode") while reducing the appearance of ghosting due to edge artifacts and flashy updates by identifying specific edge pixels to receive a special transition called an inverted Full Pulse transition ("iFull Pulse").
