Abstract: A Resource Manager node and methods for establishing and modifying an inter-domain QoS reservation between a first node in a first domain and a further node in a further domain. After detection that the QoS reservation with at least one QoS characteristic is needed or needs to be refreshed, obtaining, at the first node, network state information associated to at least one possible choice of path between the first domain and the further domain. Thereafter, determining at least one choice of path between the first domain and the second domain in view of the at least one QoS characteristic, selecting a selected path to support the QoS reservation and sending a reservation message to trigger establishment of the inter-domain QoS reservation.

Abstract: A method and packet switched cellular telecommunication system wherein data flows from a terminal are aggregated into one or more Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Label Switched Path (LSP) based on at least one criterion. In a first embodiment, the data flows are aggregated into LSP(s) based on a Quality of Service (QoS) class of each such data flows, by a Network Node, such as a Radio network Controller (RNC) or a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN). In a second embodiment, the data flows or LSPs are aggregated into another LSP(s) based on the destination routing area. The LSP aggregation is performed by routing area Edge Node, such as a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). In a first variant of the 2nd embodiment, the aggregation is used for macro-mobility, while in yet another variant the same aggregation is used for defining a virtual private network.

Abstract: A Next Generation Network (NGN) resource management system and method includes a network topology discovery mechanism at the scale of an administrative domain. Information about nodes and links, such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, name and description of devices is collected and stored in a database by way of a protocol. The protocol is notifications-based, which involves each node device (e.g., a switch, router etc.) notifying its presence to its neighboring node.

Abstract: An aggregation network is provided that includes a plurality of interconnected access routers (150). This network is configured in accordance with a partially meshed (111) physical network topology. An individual subscriber makes a request for provision of a certain bursty traffic service. Responsive thereto, a resource handler functionality (140) determines which one of a plurality of logical network topologies (ring (160), duplicated tree (162) or partially meshed (164)) is best suited to support the provision of communications for that requested bursty traffic service. Factors that are evaluated in making this determination include quality of service (QoS) entitlement, communication network resource availability, and cost constraints. The plurality of interconnected access routers are then configured by the resource handler functionality to implement the determined logical network topology on the certain physical network topology and admit the flow of bursty traffic related to the subscriber request for handling by the logical network topology.

Abstract: In a packet switched communications system that supports per-hop-behavior differentiated services, an edge packet switched node (32) examines a class of service (CoS) designation requested for a packet (50) to determine if special differentiated service (56) is desired for the packet. If so, the node bypasses the normal per-hop-behavior forwarding mechanism for supporting differentiated services in favor of the initiation of a service providing a dedicated end-to-end path through the system for handing the packet and providing a guaranteed level of quality of service. For instance, with respect to operation within a legacy asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) system, internet protocol (IP) packets or multiple protocol label switching (MPLS) packets may specify a special differentiated service comprising a constant bit rate (CBR) service. In each case, the edge legacy ATM node receiving the packet reads the header to identify that constant bit rate service is being requested, and bypasses the normal per-hop-behavior forwarding mechanism for providing differentiated services in favor of the initiation of a native ATM constant bit rate service.

Abstract: A scalable multi-level data bit stream (38) is presented which is capable of supporting variable bandwidth ATM network access, including multiple rates for plural bearer channels of voice communications and increased rates for video and data (file transfer) communications. To support communications system repairability, the bit stream (38) includes an embedded operation channel (42) for connection maintenance, performance monitoring, path tracing and testing. Furthermore, the bit stream (38) includes framing data for performing add/drop multiplexing to control bandwidth use by identifying added and dropped bearer channels communicated within the bit stream. The interface with the ATM network is provided through an ATM adaptation layer that segments the bit stream into ATM cells (26) and also assembles the bit from received ATM cells (26). Both wireless and wireline communications systems are supported with use of the bit stream to access the ATM network (12).

Responsive to data input and the operation of an expert system (50), the routing nodes are configured to implement a certain switching technology type (74) and networking technology type (72), and thus optimize portions of the communications network to handle different types of traffic (70). Traffic of the various different types may then be efficiently handled through the network by its correspondingly optimized portion.

Abstract: For each potential end-to-end connection through a network (118), a plurality of possible communications paths (22, 24, 26, 28) are identified and ranked in order of preference for selection. One of these communications paths is initially selected (112) to support a request (110) for establishment (114) of an end-to-end connection. The remaining possible communications paths comprise alternative communications paths to that selected communications path. In the event of a failure (116) of the selected communications path, one of the pre-defined alternative communcations paths is selected (118) to replace (120) the failed selected communications path and provide continued support of the end-to-end connection. The alternative communications path that is selected most likely comprises that one of the pre-defined paths having a highest relative preference ranking. Consideration may also be given during selection as to whether that highest ranked alternative communications path has sufficient capacity to serve the end-to-end connection.

Abstract: A plurality of digital subscriber line access multiplexers (102) are interconnected with each other in a ring topology (180) via a plurality of wireless communications links (182). Each included network terminal (112) provides local loop access to a connected subscriber device (114) and is connected to an associated one of the digital subscriber line access multiplexers via a wireless access link (110). This wireless local loop system is overlaid by a conventional cellular communications system including a base station (204) in each cell (202) capable of supporting wireless communications with cellular mobile stations (206) over an air interface (208). In the event of a failure (214, 232) in the wireless local loop system that would leave a certain network terminal stranded with respect to its communications service, that stranded network terminal shifts (240) from use of its wireless access link to instead utilize the cellular system air interface for its subscriber device communications. An appropriate adjustment in the rate of the subscriber device communications is made to account for any difference in the throughput supported by the wireless access link and the throughput supported by the cellular air interface.
