Abstract: A mud acid composition for use in the oil and gas industry is prepared by mixing: (i) an inhibited hydrofluoric acid composition comprising (a) hydrofluoric acid, and (b) an alkanolamine such as monoethanolamine, wherein the molar ratio of alkanolamine:HF is at least 1:1; and (ii) an acid having a pKa value of less than 3, for example HC1. The addition of the acid (ii) to the inhibited hydrofluoric acid composition (i) restores the ability of the HF to acidize sandstone formations and to dissolve silica or silicate deposits. The inhibited hydrofluoric acid composition is less corrosive, and thus safer to use, than aqueous HF.
