Abstract: The invention relates to a pebble bed reactor with a core cavern filled with fuel element pebbles and bounded by reflector material. Fuel element pebbles traverse the core cavern due to the effect of gravity. There is downward or upward flow of cooling gas through the core cavern. The cooling gas pipes provided for this purpose extend laterally above the base of the cavern bottom. Cooling gas can be conveyed without problems through the fuel-element pebble bed for long periods of operation.
