Abstract: There is described a process of signing documents comprising generating a document identification (DID) from a digital copy (DOCDC) of a document to be signed by at least one signatory and encoding the document identification (DID) into one or more watermarks (WM; WMSA;...). A hard copy (DOCHC) of the document to be signed incorporating the one or more watermark (WM; WMSA;...) is produced. The one or more watermarks (WM; WMSA;...) provided on the hard copy (DOCHC) of the document is/are read using an optical reader device (ORD; 10) and the document identification ([DID]ENC) encoded into the one or more watermarks (WM; WMSA) read by the optical reader device (ORD; 10) is decoded. The hard copy (DOCHC) of the document to be signed is associated to the digital copy (DOCDC) of the document to be signed based on the decoded document identification ([DID]DEC). Signing of the document by the at least one signatory is performed using a digital signing device (DSD; 10), and signatory information (KSIG) unique to the at least one signatory using the digital signing device (DSD; 10) is obtained. Finally, a digital signature (SIG) of the digital copy (DOCDC) of the document is generated based on the decoded document identification ([DID]DEC) and the signatory information (KSIG), following which the digital signature (SIG) is applied to the digital copy (DOCDC) of the document to produce a digitally signed copy (DOCSIG) of the document.
