Abstract: A pocketed spring assembly (12, 1 2a, 12b, 12d, 12e, 12f, 12g) comprises a plurality of parallel strings (26, 26a, 26d, 26dd, 26e, 26ee, 26f, 26ff, 26g, 26gg, 26') of individually pocketed springs (28). Each string (26, 26a, 26d, 26dd, 26e, 26ee, 26f, 26ff, 26g, 26gg, 26') is joined to at least one adjacent string. Each string (26, 26a, 26d, 26dd, 26e, 26ee, 26f, 26ff, 26g, 26gg, 26') has first and second opposed plies (48, 50) of fabric and a plurality of pockets (38, 38') formed along a length of the string by transverse segmented seams (54, 54') joining the plies. Gaps (66, 66', 70, 70') between the segments of the seams (52, 52', 54, 54') allow air to pass into and out of the pockets (38, 38') despite the fabric being impermeable to airflow through the fabric. The size of the gaps (66, 66', 70, 70') determines the firmness or "feel" of the pocketed spring assembly (12, 12a, 12b, 12d, 12e, 12f, 12g) or portion thereof.

Abstract: A comfort layer (56e) for a bedding or seating product has slow-acting pockets (95, 101, 105) characterized by the individual mini coil springs (28) of the comfort layer (56e) being pocketed with either semi-impermeable or impermeable fabric. Each weld seam (70e) joining opposed plies (65e, 67e) of fabric around each of the coil springs (28) of the comfort layer (56e) may be segmented, allowing air to flow between the segments (81e, 68e, 70e), thereby increasing the luxury "feel" of the comfort layer (56e). The method of making the comfort layer (56e) includes compressing the mini coil springs (28) and creating pockets (95, 101, 105) with a welding horn and an anvil.

Abstract: A pocketed spring assembly (12, 1 2', 1 2a, 12d, 1 1 2, 212, 31 2, 412, 412', 512, 612) comprises a plurality of parallel strings of springs (26, 26a, 26', 126, 226) held together with tabs (50, 60, 250, 260). Longitudinal seams (78) joining overlapping tabs (50, 60, 250, 260) extend generally the same direction as the strings of springs (26, 26a, 26', 1 26, 226). Pockets (80, 280) are formed along a string of springs (26, 26a, 26', 1 26, 226) by aligned separating seams (82, 84, 282, 284). At least one spring (38) is positioned in each pocket (80, 280). Each separating seam (82, 84, 282, 284) joins opposed plies of the string and keeps the spring (38) in its pocket (80, 280). Ends of aligned separating seams (82, 84, 282, 284) are spaced from each other, thereby improving airflow between pockets (80, 280).
