Abstract: A method of producing a molecular structure comprises determining a desired shape of the molecular structure; providing a multi-layer structure, the multilayer structure having at least first and second adjacent generally planar molecular layers, the first and second generally planar molecular layers each consisting of an array of covalently bonded atoms; arranging the multi-layer structure in a desired orientation relative to a cutter; using the cutter to break bonds within the first generally planar molecular layer to produce a first edge of a desired configuration corresponding to the desired shape of the molecular structure; and using the cutter to break bonds within the second generally planar molecular layer to produce a second edge of a desired configuration corresponding to the desired shape of the molecular structure; and allowing the first edge of the first generally planar molecular layer and the second edge of the second generally planar molecular layer to relax so that the first edge of the first generally planar molecular layer and the second edge of the second generally planar molecular layer covalently bond to one another.
