Abstract: The present invention provides novel methods and apparatus for continuously casting molten metal in a block caster. Abstract: Molten metal is cast in a continuous caster (100) formed by movable mold parts travelling through casting loops (130). A plurality of cooling stages (105, 110, 115, 120, 125) are used for cooling the mold parts. A coating apparatus (140) is used to coat the movable parts and a cleaning apparatus for removing debris from the movable parts can be included in cooling stages (105, 125). Both fixed temperature sensors (170) and temperature sensors (175) embedded in the movable parts transmit data to a controller (165). Data relating to the cast quality and the condition of the casting surface are transmitted from cameras (185, 186).
