    Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving SRS received from a plurality of UEs associated with the base station from an RU associated with the base station, estimating strengths or signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) for pre-determined beams for each of the plurality of UEs based on the received SRS, selecting a subset of the plurality of UEs to which downlink data is to be transmitted for a RBG in a TTI based on the estimated strengths or SNRs of the pre-determined beams for the plurality of UEs, computing a precoding matrix for the RBG based on the selected subset, preparing multi-layered UE data for the RBG based on the selected subset and the computed precoding matrix, sending the multi-layered UE data and the precoding matrix for the RBG to the RU, where the RU transmits pre-coded multi-layered UE data to the UEs in the subset using MIMO technologies.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving information regarding a subset of a plurality of UEs selected for uplink data transmissions per PRG and a number of layers for each of the subset of the plurality of UEs in a TTI from a DU associated with the base station, receiving uplink radio signals from the subset of the plurality of UEs, where the uplink radio signals include DMRS and user data, computing a DMRS-based channel matrix for the subset of the plurality of UEs based on the received DMRS, calculating an RX beamformer matrix based on the DMRS-based channel matrix, producing N layers or greater than N spatial streams by performing an RX beamforming and MIMO detection on the received uplink radio signals, and sending the N layers or the greater than N spatial streams to the DU.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving intermediate frequency (IF) signals for k spatial layers to be transmitted from a wireless modem associated with the wireless communication device, where each of the k spatial layers occupies a pre-determined bandwidth, and where k is two or more, converting the IF signals into radio frequency (RF) signals by converting each of the k spatial layers into each of k orthogonal channel bands, where neighboring two channel bands among the k orthogonal channel bands are separated by a pre-determined frequency separation that is large enough to avoid interference between the two channel bands, and sending the RF signals to a radio-frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) associated with the wireless communication device, where the RFIC transmits the RF signals wirelessly.
