Abstract: A latch has a casing (1); a latch bolt assembly mounted in the casing and comprising a latch bolt head (5) and a latch bolt spindle (6); a follower assembly comprising a follower core (16) designed to receive the spindle of a handle, follower arms (21a, 24a) mounted on the follower core (16) and a link (11) arranged to be engaged by the follower arms (21a, 24a) and to be engaged with the latch bolt spindle (6); and a follower spring (27)arranged to act on the link (11). The spring (27) is mounted on a rod (28) which is arranged to act on the link (11). The spring (27) is mounted on a rod (28) which is arranged to extend into the casing. The rod (28) has an enlarged diameter portion (29)from which bayonet prongs (30) extend radially outwards. The rod (28) with the spring (27) mounted thereon extends through a bore (33) in a plate (32) mounted in the casing. Slots (34) extend radially outwards from the bore (33) and the bayonet prongs (30) can pass through the slots (34). The rod (28) is accessible from outside the casing through an aperture in the rear casing wall (36) whereby the rod can be engaged through said aperture and withdrawn from the casing through the aperture. The spring (27) is withdrawn with the rod (28) so that it can be changed for a stronger or weaker spring. In this manner, the strength of the spring can be chosen to meet the requirements of the latch and the spring can be changed without having to open the casing.

Abstract: A handle assembly for a door or the like structure comprises a pair of plates (11, 21) which are adapted to be fitted to a door or like structure. Each plate (11, 21) has an aperture (15, 25) which is adapted to receive the spindle (32, 42) of a handle (31, 41) and each handle (31, 41) is provided with a cone-shaped neck (34, 44) and a groove (35, 45) located between the larger end of the cone (34, 44) and a hand gripping portion of the handle (31,41). Each plate (11, 21) is provided, in the region of the aperture (15, 25), with a pair of spring-loaded plates (16) and the arrangement is such, when a handle (31, 41) is to be fitted to a plate (11, 21), the spindle (32, 42) of the handle (31, 41) is inserted into the aperture (15, 25) and the handle (31, 41) is pushed towards the plate (11, 21) so that the spring-loaded plates (16) are displaced by the cone (34, 44) and then engage in the groove (35, 45) to hold the handle (31, 41) in position on the plate (11, 21). The invention is also applicable to the fitting of handles to roses instead of plates and to the fitting of knobs to either plates or roses.

Abstract: A lock for a door or the like has a casing (1) and a deadbolt assembly which comprises a bolt (5) and a drive mechanism in the form of a cam (9) of a cylinder lock (10) which is adapted to be operated by a key. The drive mechanism is arranged to drive a coupler (11) which is guided for sliding movement in the casing (1) between a withdrawn position in which the bolt (5) is located substantially wholly within the casing (1) and an extended or thrown position in which a portion of the bolt (5) projects from the casing (1). A lever in the form of a link (16) is arranged between the coupler (11) and the bolt (5), the link (16) being pivotally mounted in the casing (1) and provided with first engagement means in the form of a pin (19) which is engageable in a slot (15) in the coupler (11) and second engagement means in the form of a slot (18) which is arranged to engage with a pin (20) on the bolt (5). The arrangement is such that, when the bolt (5) is in the withdrawn position and the coupler (11) is engaged by the cam (9) to move the bolt (5) to the thrown position, the link (16) is engaged by the coupler (11) and is effective to increase the movement of the bolt (5) relative to the movement of the coupler (11) thereby to increase the throw of the bolt.

Abstract: A latch has means for enabling a latch bolt (22) to be reversed without having to open the casing (1) and without having to remove the casing from a door in which the casing has been fitted. A preferred means for achieving this object comprises a latch bolt lath (34) having a projection (18) which is arranged to extend out of the inner forend (26) through an aperture when the outer forend (29) is removed. The latch bolt (6) is rotatably mounted on the latch bolt lath (34) and a spring (24) serves to urge the latch bolt (6) out of the casing (1) by acting on the latch bolt lath (34). Thus, when the outer forend (29) is removed, the latch bolt (22) is clear of the inner forend (26) and can be turned through 180° to reverse the latch bolt. The outer forend (29) can then be re-fitted by means of screws (28).
