A solvent band casting system is disclosed which contains a tank for mixing and/or storing a polymer solution for a band casting machine having at least a first and a second rotating drums about which a continuous metal band is tensioned to travel with the rotation of the drums. A sheeting die applies the polymer solution from the tank to the metal band where a drying chamber, enclosing a least a portion of the metal band downline of the sheeting die, is used to remove solvent from the polymer solution as it travels in a thin sheet on the metal band. A surfactant applicator in communication with a supply of surfactant and a portion of the metal band is disclosed. In addition, the use of a surfactant to substantially reduce or eliminate bubbles in the polymer film product is disclosed, as well as the mechanisms by which the surfactant is believed to facilitate bubble reduction. Finally, a system controller can be connected to monitor and/or control at least one component of the system.

A water-soluble, halogen-resistant film-forming composition useful for packaging water treatment products is disclosed. The film can include an acid-stable, water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol polymer, an oxidizable organic material, a chelating agent, a free radical scavenger, and secondary additives such as plasticizers, lubricants, and surfactants. The resulting film has favorable solubility properties after having been exposed to halogenated (e.g., chlorinated and brominated) compositions such as water treatment and agricultural products for prolonged periods of time.

A method and system for continuously preparing a crosslinked, solvent-cast film are disclosed. The method includes continuously providing a pressurized stream of polymer solution, continuously combining a fluid stream including a crosslinking agent with the pressurized stream of polymer solution, mixing the combination of polymer solution and fluid stream in-line, continuously applying the resulting mixture to a continuously moving surface, and then evaporating solvent from the mixture to form a polymeric film. The system includes: (i) a continuous polymer solution casting system, including a first pump in fluid communication with a supply of polymer solution, a casting die for continuously depositing polymer solution disposed in proximity to a moving casting surface, and a first conduit providing a flow path for the polymer solution from the pump to the casting die; (ii) a secondary liquid component injection system, including a second reservoir for holding a supply of a secondary liquid component including a crosslinking agent, a variable-speed second pump in fluid communication with the supply of secondary liquid component, a needle valve, and a second conduit providing a flow path for the secondary liquid component from the reservoir, through the second pump, then through the needle valve, and to an outlet; (iii) a conduit junction connecting the outlet of the secondary liquid component injection system to the first conduit of the continuous polymer solution casting system, the junction disposed downstream of the first pump; and (iv) an in-line mixer disposed between the casting die and the conduit junction.

Disclosed are plasticized, water-soluble films having favorable cold-water solubility, wet handling, and thermoforming characteristics, and which can include a PVOH resin made up of blend of two or more PVOH polymers each having a monomodal molecular weight distribution, and the PVOH resin characterized by a viscosity in a range of about 13.5 cP to about 20 cP (or a corresponding weight average molecular weight), a degree of hydrolysis of about 84% to about 92%, a polydispersity index value in a range of about 1 to about 5, a residual water content of about 4 wt.% to about 10 wt.%, and a Resin Selection Index value in a range of 0.255 to 0.315; methods of making the films; compositions including PVOH resins for making the films; and pouch and packet articles made from the films.
