    Abstract: A lighting device comprises a carrier having a radially outwardly facing mounting surface and an inner cavity radially within the outer mounting surface. Solid state lighting devices are mounted on the outer mounting surface and a driver is housed in the inner cavity. A ring shaped optical unit defines a light output region of the lighting device and is mounted around the carrier. An outer housing reflects light from the arrangement of solid state lighting devices to the ring shaped optical unit. This provides a compact arrangement, in which the driver, the heat sink (implemented by the carrier), and the solid state lighting arrangement are essentially in a plane. This is possible by providing a ring of light sources facing radially outwardly, with the driver mounted radially inside the ring. The radial light output is converted to a light output with a desired direction and beam shape by the optical unit.

    Abstract: A luminaire comprises a light guide (72) having light outcoupling elements (77) at one side and a flat light output surface (78) at the other side, which is visible in use of the luminaire. An array of solid state lighting elements (84) is arranged around the edge of the light guide facing the general light output direction (80). A respective reflector (90) is associated with each solid state lighting element (84) for reflecting light into the light guide (72). By providing the lighting elements all facing the general light output direction, they can be formed as a single unit, or as a small number of sub-units, thereby simplifying the manufacture. The design of the reflectors, the positioning of the lighting elements, and the design of the light outcoupling elements together may be used to create an asymmetrical light output beam shape. Actuation of different lighting elements may be used to provide different asymmetric light outputs.
