Abstract: The invention relates to a panel of molecular markers, which in combination of at least two markers define a unique state of the immune system in patients infected with a pathogen, patients suffering from pancreatitis, patients suffering from acute lung injury and/or patients suffering from head, chest and/or other trauma,, wherein the markers are predictive of severe respiratory conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), admittance into ICU, development of cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and/or secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH). The biomarkers provided herein are also provided for monitoring severe respiratory conditions, relapse of the conditions and/or as targets for therapeutic intervention.
