Abstract:
Lithographic printing plates for wet or waterless offset printing are disclosed which can be imagewise exposed using a digitally controlled IR laser. The invention comprises a laser imageable lithographic printing plate comprising a substrate, a photosensitive coating on the substrate, and a water-soluble laser ablatable top coating containing dyes or polymers that absorb infrared, ultraviolet and visible light. Laminated transparent polymer films and/or peelable polymeric coatings films can be interposed between the coated substrate and a water-soluble and/or organic solvent soluble laser ablatable top layer to augment plate production or image inscription on the plate.
Abstract:
Solid anti-fogging agents such as 5-nitroindazole which are otherwise poorly soluble in water are converted ro readily water soluble compositions that are solids at room temperature when they are first dissolved in water soluble polymers or other organic compounds that have a melting point above room temperature and do not chemically react with the anti-fogging agent. The anti-foggants are preferably dissolved in the polymer or organic compound at or near the compounds' melting point below 175 DEG C. The solid compositions so formed to contain the anti-fogging agent are combined in predetermined amounts with other solid components of rapid access developers in a solid, single part package to form a single part, rapid access developer having high contrast.

Abstract:
A radiation sensitive composition containing an adduct of a diazonium resin having pendant diazonium groups, with a sulfonated acrylic copolymer having pendant sulfonate groups. The sulfonated acrylic copolymer contains an acrylic moiety and a sulfonated styryl or acrylic moiety. The copolymer may optionally contain styryl moieties. The composition is useful as a radiation sensitive layer in imaging elements for graphic arts applications and is particularly useful in preparing durable, long-wear, printing plates.
Abstract:
Waterless and wet lithographic plates precursors are prepared as composites comprising presensitized (PS) lithographic plate precursors supporting radiation-ablative coatings containing an ablation sensitizer and an imaging amount of a non-ablative ultra-violet (UV) absorber. Digitized IR laser image inscription within the ablative coatings initiates ablation-driven transfer of the UV absorber to the PS plate. UV exposure of the plate followed by conventional development provides lithographic plates that exhibit high impression life suitable for high volume printing runs.
Abstract:
An apparatus for fabricating printing plates (15), e.g. lithographic or offset printing plates. The apparatus comprises processing means for digitizing an image, at least one assembly having at least one ink jet printing head (12) and operatively connected to the processing means, control means (11) operatively connected to the processing means and the assembly for supplying digital information to the assembly to project the digitized image upon the printing plate (15), and drive mechanisms (17, 18) operatively connected to the control means (11) and the assembly for controlling ink jetting movement of the printing head (12). An x-y table (14) is preferably also present for carrying the printing head (12) for planar movement with respect to the printing plate (15). The movement of the table (14) permits the printing of multiple pages (16a, 16b, 16c) upon large lithographic plates (15).
Abstract:
Printing inks comprising a pigment and an aqueous or non-aqueous solvent (or a mixture of such solvents) have reduced abrasiveness towards printing surfaces (e.g. gravure printing cylinders) by incorporation in the ink of an alkoxylated dibasic phosphate ester and at least one alkali metal salt of a dialkylsulfosuccinic ester.
