Abstract: The disclosure relates to a desalination system and a method for operating the desalination system. Example embodiments include a desalination system (100) comprising a partitioned container (101), a membrane container (104) housing a cross- flow semipermeable membrane (105), a feed pump (108) for supplying saline water, a recirculation pump (109), a main valve (110), a bypass valve (111) and a purge valve (112). The system (100) operates in a first pressurisation stage where saline water is provided by the feed pump (108) while the bypass valve (111) is open, followed by a second pressurisation stage where an upstream compartment (114) of the container (101) is filled and a recharge stage where the main valve (110) is closed and concentrated saline water is purged via the purge valve (112). An inlet valve (116) may be provided, which is closed in the first pressurisation stage and open in the second pressurisation stage and recharge stage.
